Any major issues? I know that rust is a problem with these trucks, but besides that.
Link to this truck in comments because Kinja

They can’t be that bad.

Engine is fine. Transmission will die. Cheap to rebuild though. Besides that, the only thing worse that I’ve driven than that, is an Aveo.

What made it so bad? Haha

Intake manifold comes to mind.
My buddy just did his on his 95 at 275k. He just bought the part from RockAuto and followed a YouTube video to fix it.
Otherwise, great truck.

The 4Runner feels like a tight, well put together sports car... in it’s current worn out state. Vague is an accurate description.

Like just bad brakes?

The 4l60e had a rep, the hvac/stereo controls are crap, and the steering gets more play than I think they should...but other than that super reliable

Intake gaskets and the CPI “Spider” are common issues with easy fixes. The trans should be a 4L60E which is pretty stout if cared for.
Here’s a good site that outlines potential trans issues. http://www.twincharlotte.com/transmission-r…

Worked fine, no feel whatsoever. Same with steering. It’s like driving with a gaming wheel, but that might insult modern gaming wheels.

I just need a basic pickup, so that being said it should be fine for that..

Cool, thanks for the link.

Rwd or 4wd?
![]() 05/29/2016 at 16:52 |

I’ve test driven 3, and they all were 4WD and felt the same.

If you can get a 3/4 ton with the 5.7 it takes care of the trans issue

So no steering input or anything huh?
Also, how was the engine note?

94' 2wd with a 350 and a flipped air filter lid

Nope, but engine not wasn’t bad. One of them had a 383 in it. Still was unexciting.

Rust is an issue with all American trucks of that era...I don’t know what ‘typical Chevy rust’ constitutes, but Fords are cab corners and rear wheel wells. And ‘typical Dodge rust’ means that it becomes a rust colored pile of dirt in your driveway.
Anyway, it's a SBC. It won't be a lot of fun, but it'll work hard.

And that's all I need. Just something to get the job done.

Two words “spider injection"

Kinda easy to replace apparantly though.

These trucks are nearly indestructible. Dad has one he has had for 12 years. Has over 300K on original motor. Had to replace a fuel pump once. New Trans a couple years ago. But overall just a solid workhorse.

You're gonna get terrible gas mileage. But it's an SBC so it's a solid engine.

It takes quite a few hours(18), and you want to do the lower intake manifold gaskets at the same time. Trust me.

Drove one of those for work. Absolute garbage to drive. Perfectly fine for utility. Engine had over 100k miles, I did crack the distributor cap driving down a bumpy road (!) but everything else worked on that truck.

How exactly was it bad? Just wondering...

Since you’re an enthusiast, I mean the steering, pedal and brake feel were absolute garbage. I felt miserable driving it. Parking those big trucks is a bitch too.
